Interferential Stimulator

Interferential therapy, during the past twenty years, has increased in popularity to the point that it is now perhaps the most widely used form of electrotherapy in the United States. First developed in Europe, where this unique form of stimulation has been utilized for numerous indications, interferential units have been marketed since the early 1950's. We here at Advanced Rehab Technologies have had a great deal of experience in using Interferential Stimulators to help patients with pain. 

Typical Indications for Interferential Stimulator use is: 
Symptomatic relief and management of chronic and post-traumatic acute pain & management of
post-surgical pain.

Common Uses for the Stim are: 

• Pre- and post-orthopedic surgery
• Joint injury syndrome
• Cumulative trauma disorders
• Inflammatory conditions
• Pain control of various origins

Electrode placement should be in an "X" pattern, as the point of intersection provides a third stronger frequency.

Interferential Stimulators work by crossing two alternating, medium frequency currents which net to a biologically effective spectrum that penetrates deep into the soft tissue and bone. This produces a wide range of physiological effects. 

The Interferential Stimulator minimizes impedance levels of the body by delivering medium frequency current of 4000Hz to 4150Hz. This current has the force to pass through the peripheral layer with very little stimulation of the sensory or motor nerves. An example would be, a frequency of 4000 Hz interfering with another frequency of 4150 Hz creates a third current of 100 Hz. This 100Hz is left at the site of the pain. 

This deep penetrating current creates a physiological effect at the cellular level. The Interferential unit operates on an ionization theory, capable of changing the permeability of the plasma membrane. This allows sodium ions (Na+) to cross the plasma membrane and active transport by activating the Na/K+ pump. The pump begins to control levels of (Na+), and (K+) within the interstitial fluid. This forces fluid to exit swollen cells. Oxygen is increased to the area, this helps remove bradykin,and histamines that cause inflammation. 

The Interferential Stimulator also helps to initiate Endorphin release via neurotransmitters in the body. Endorphins are your bodies own, natural opium. Hence, your bodies own natural pain killers help diminish your pain. 
Interferential Stimulation does not create physical movement, or patient discomfort. The stimulation does not generate heat, or damage new tissue growth.
